Details of the MAXX project

There has been a positive trend in Humanitarian Demining efforts to use remote controlled demining assistance machinery such as Mini-Flails, Mini-Mulchers, and EOD Robots. However, the main obstacles encountered with their use have been:

  1. Visual control
  2. Rapid deployment and recovery
  3. Damage from high velocity fragments
  4. Operator protection from high velocity fragments
  5. Maintenance and repair on location


The HEC MAXX will solve all the above-mentioned problems and introduces a more modular approach to the system.

A modular approach

HEC has determined that a modular approach to demining system development is a valuable approach to adopt for all future projects. Modular systems can be defined as systems which are built up from independent building blocks or Lego blocks. Like Lego, HEC modules can be snapped together to build different system configurations depending on the task to be performed. The more blocks you have, the more task configurations can be built. In reality, HEC is working towards two different modular systems: Personnel modules and Machine modules.

The crucial benefit

Unlike other mini-flails, the turret of the HEC design rotates on top of the prime mover. This allows the articulating arm & cutter assembly to access areas that other designs cannot reach, such as culverts, ditches, and steep slopes. The survivability of the system is greatly improved by the standoff between the chassis and the Mulcher and is further enhanced by the low profile of the prime mover. Since it is designed as a ground preparation tool, all areas cleared from vegetation are additionally verified by manual Demining teams or explosives sniffing dogs. This saves the MAXX from the hazard of driving onto un-cleared ground – different to all other mulching, flailing, tilling etc machines other than HEC’s. Nevertheless the armor will provide sufficient protection against AP frag and blast mines when accidentally driven over.

More advantages

Thanks to the unique deployment system the HEC MAXX is not suffering any weight constraints unlike other products which means that:
a) Standard components can be used (Brokk, WMF, WagWay, Sicma, Caterpillar)
b) Future components may include hitec sensors, robotic grips, etc.
c) Armor (hard and soft) can be added for full protection

Positive side effects

The mulching system is specifically designed to cut vegetation up to 20mm without disturbing the soil or the landmines that may be present. Experience with MgM Samil20 MPV mulching system has demonstrated a positive side-effect of sheering off the fuse/detonator assemblies from bounding fragmentation mines like the OZM and stake mines like POMZ without detonation. This leads to a faster and much safer work environment for suspect tripwire operations in dense vegetation, such as is encountered around the world. Part of the development process will be the definition of which attachment to use for which condition.

Next steps

The carefully chosen BROKK 330 D prime mover can also be used to remotely investigate any suspect items through a CCTV system, employ new sensors or the e.g. an Airspade for rapid excavation of sensitive items, plus remotely remove unstable items or place explosive charges for disposal operations in volatile environments.
The realization of the individual parts of the project is planned with the same Namibian companies as the Rotar Mk I, the Mk II, the MiVA OPS System and other projects in Namibia.
